'We Are Nottingham': The Spotify Playlist Capturing the Sound of Our City

Updated: Jan 4, 2021

Spotify pays homage to Nottingham’s thriving music scene with the impressive ‘We are Nottingham’ playlist. The playlist features over five hours’ worth of quality listening, proving to be a delight for many, since it has already scored over 500 followers.

An unforgiving new generation of Nottingham artists has emerged, and Spotify has rightfully granted recognition with the specially curated ‘We are Nottingham’ playlist. Notts is brimming with musical excellence- it’s a place that does it like no other, with its small but charming live music venues and a real strong sense of community. Musical diversity is at the heart of the city, fuelling some of the greatest singers, rappers, DJ’s and performers in the game. This admirable sense of diversity alongside creative brilliance has driven the recognition of our city by streaming royalty, Spotify. We’ve highlighted some of the playlist’s finest features, so you can really get a sense of what the 0115 has to offer.

Ella Knight

If one thing’s for certain, it’s that Ella Knight is destined for success. She’s sassy but soothing, feisty but oh so charming- and this is all just from two single releases. She really has us thirsty for more. Her sound is somewhat of a soulful seduction whilst infusing the classical rudiments of jazz. Knight’s proved her sound to be wildly dynamic, with her feature on BRU-C’s (another Notts great) DnB track ‘Snakes and Ladders’.

Juga-Naut

Easily one of the finest wordsmiths about, Juga- Naut has added some serious value to the Notts hip-hop scene. His lyrical prowess is crystal clear from the very first listen, expect intricate vocals, punchy beats and a whole lotta passion. Together with other Notts elites Capo and Vandal Savage the trio have created VVV, a group expertly infusing grime and hip-hop- a collaboration not to be slept on. The talent doesn’t stop there, Juga-Naut is an avid chef and foodie, even though he calls it his vice, his tasty food pics on his insta beg to differ. Whether it’s perfecting ackee& saltfish or mastering beats Juga-Naut’s got it covered.

Yazmin Lacey

Yazmin Lacey serves up silky-smooth soulful realness in any song she graces with her voice. Lacey’s celestial vocals will take you on a spiritual journey of self-love, contentment, and relaxation. Her stellar new EP ‘Morning Matters’ seamlessly contrasts the ordinary burdens of day-to-day life with her not so ordinary voice. Lacey’s lyricism exudes charisma, she’s unapologetically herself “I’ll never be your puppet on your strings”, and it’s safe to say she’s owning it.

Bakes

Criminally underrated and authentically Notts, Bakes meticulously mingles hip-hop with lo-fi inspired beats. His spacey new album release ‘Peace Garden’ not only oozes quality but sets out all the chill vibes you’d expect from the title. Bakes generously gives listeners a glimpse into his psyche with his straight-talking vocals pacing over themes like disillusionment and his no-drama policy. With Bakes partnering with Kimnara on multiple tunes a relaxing listen is guaranteed, a perfect choice for that late-night wind down.
